For George, we may or may not be able to go to his dentist appointment! You can't see it well in the picture, but there were big puffy snowflakes falling down and our driveway is completely covered! We did get chains while down for Emilie's appointment, so we're hoping they'll help pull us up our steep driveway (major design flaw). Anyway, I hope it all works out tomorrow. Keep George in your prayers, I hope his getting a shot in the mouth won't be too painful or traumatic!
Today Emilie had her 15 month appointment! Sadly, she remembered the trauma from last time's shots (she's thrown-up the past two times in complete shock and horror), and didn't trust a single soul there! The appointment still went pretty well though despite that. When the time for shots came though, instead of just letting Scott take over like every time before (with me hiding in the hallway), I stayed and held her this time. I suspected it was more traumatic when I wasn't there (she's a 'Mommy's Girl' when she's in pain), so I was hoping it'd help, and it did! I also found out they had popsicles there and that was an awesome addition to help her! Between mommy-comfort and a pink popsicle, Emilie got over the shot in a jiffy! Man, I felt so better about it this time! Emilie is looking healthy and doing good too, by the way and is 40th percentile in weight and hight.

George did amazing at his first dentist appointment (and Emilie did pretty well too, though she didn’t really let them do anything), and everyone was completely shocked seeing him so calm. I explained I prepped him with the Berenstain Bears Visit to the Dentist and left out certain words (like “yank” and certain aspects of it that might give him ideas of fear). I basically told them, “look, he has nothing to fear, unless you give him to”. I really made sure the doctor noticed this, because he was so content and at home there! He knew exactly what was going to happen at a regular check up because of the Berenstain Bears! It turns out they use that exact book and read it to kids at school to educate them about the dentist.
Well, despite how amazing George did and how much he enjoyed his visit, we were in for a nasty realization. Because I started a solid brushing routine so late in his life, when the damage had just started, George has two major cavities and 2-3 several minor ones. The dentist assistant gave me a one on one education on how teeth are built, and how cavities really effect them, and it sadly eye opening. Apparently teeth aren’t “solid white”, but made up with three layers. The first layer, the white enamel is surprisingly thin. The second layer, Dentin, is a much softer layer. The the middle contains the nerves… Sugar eats holes into the enamel, and once it gets to the second layer, the whole tooth becomes in danger and the decay can spread to the middle. With children in particular, tooth decay spreads rapidly. If tooth decay gets to the middle, you need a root canal, and George may need at least two, with some other fillings. It’s surprising, but if you ever see permanent black in your back teeth that can’t be brushed away, it’s most likely not “black” but actually the dentin layer, and would actually be dark pink if you shined a light on it. Despite the sadness and the horror of the news, I’m still not going to have George put under for his dental work, but have the darn shot to numb the area. We’ll be having two teeth fixed on at a time, starting with the worst. They do their best to distract from the shot, and there will the TV will be on too (George really loved watching TV while they cleaned his teeth). I’m hoping it won’t be too painful and that he can still have a positive association with the dentist. I could have possibly screwed up that chance though. It’s pretty amazing, but we’re actually flossing now (they told me it’s just as important as brushing, and you can actually get cavities between your teeth!) and also brushing after every meal. We seriously picked an amazing dentist office because no one has ever been able to convince me to floss. That, and that Scott and I have both decided to go to the dentist ourselves. For Emilie, the dentist visit went pretty much uneventful. I looked at the assistant in doubt and asked her, “you really think she’ll be okay with that?” as she prepared for the X-Ray gun. Emilie sat on my lap as the assistant assured she would, but at every turn Emilie laid down the law with her with a resounding “NO”. There were no X-Ray blankets laid on her, no teeth cleaning with their fancy electric tooth brush, and she barely allowed them to “peek” into her mouth. I’m very happy we didn’t have to pay for it, because they charged insurance full price! At the end though, they gave her some sparkley sun glasses and all of a sudden she became flamboyant and the star of the show! It was so darn cute! The assistant said, “Wow, we should have given those to her from the start!”. It was pretty funny. Well, the next appointment will be next week, and I’ll blog about what happens. Until then, George and Emilie, you both did a wonderful job! Love, Mommy A new haircut, already! The last cut had hardly anything cut and was more like a styling trim, but this time I made a leap. How did I do it? I have no idea (to be honest, I never do)! It was basically a bowl cut, and then with the lower half I used some sort of electric man hair cutyer thingy... which might have actually been a beard trimmer, lol. Anyway, it turned out nice! Both my mom and my hubby like it, an accomplishment I thought would never be achieved! George and I like it too ;)
Ah! So sorry for the lack of posts! I just took these photos just for you! Its so beautiful and sunny now, a big change from the winter gloom and cold so we're all getting a chance to play everyday after breakfast in the driveway. Im still scared of the mountain lions, but its comforting that human kills are extremely rare. Out in the driveway, we just make sure to make a lot of noise (kids don't make it hard ;)), and occasionally play music. As you can see from the pictures, Emilie is starting to walk, taking up to 10 steps at a time so far before falling onto her butt! We're super excited and proud of her <3 I admit there's fear along with the excitement, but Im excited just the same!
Oh dear, Emilie deleted half this post, while I was editing on my phone, darn. Well, another thing new is that we found the perfect family dentistry, with a husband and wife as the dentists there, having their buisness together. The wife specializes in childrens dentistry, and the husband in adults. George and Emilie have their first appointment Monday! It will be their first visits for both of them! Scotts really against dentists, but Im pretty neutral and think they're needed (hmm, that seems exact opposite of my hubby, maybe Im an advocate of them? Though I myself havent been in years...). Anyway, I'll make a point to take a picture of them at the dentists on Monday! Love, Mary I wanted to share Sam's ad as a memory and to share the best looking ad on craigslist for a goat! ...mostly because I love my goat way too much... and in return of a priced-to-sell price (wethers go for $100), we received three inquiries of Sam today! The first inquiry was really promising, but she took to long to reply (email), the second was a voice mail left (and I was still holding out for the first woman), and the third was a text right before 9pm tonight... we went with the third. Reason, texting is way faster to respond to and a whole lot less intimidating! We found out from the buyers that they are wanting to start a petting zoo for their grand children and, most importantly, that Sam would be well taken care of and loved! I'm a little worried that they're "starting" a zoo, but his odds are far better there than here on death row (and I secretly wanted him to go to a little zoo. The one up here wouldn't take him because he had horns... I think, they actually never called me back, but that's what I think...). Sam will be boarding with a two month old hornless female and also some cute bunnies! We're also excited that they offered for us to come visit him there too (a little more easy to part knowing that). We're so excited for Sam and hope he can hold on for one more day (he's not eating besides when we're out there beside him). The buyers will be coming tomorrow to pick him up and we're excited to meet them. Here is the craigslist ad we posted below. Isn't he cute? We're so going to miss him but know he's going to be so much happier with a friend! We're going to miss you Sam... Black Nigerian Dwarf Kid, naturally horned (in need of a new home) - $75 (Julian)We have a beautiful Nigerian Dwarf purebred, with glossy black hair and natural horned. Our goat Sam is a one year old wether, born last February. He has a great temperament, cute bleat and good with kids (our children have never pushed down on his head, so he doesn't butt). On walks he'll do little jumps and tricks to keep up and won't wonder very far if you have dried corn in your pockets. Before adopting, we require that you already have some goat friends at home, have proper place to keep him with no imminent dangers, and have an ample supply of love to give! Due to our mountain lion problem, we must find him another home. Sam's brother was taken and now he is the sole surviver.
To watch a little video of Sam, you can go here: https://youtu.be/XGXwA4LyRoo Phone: show contact info "Oh crap, it's Summer!". These were the words I said this morning when I came face to face (5 feet apart) with a brown recluse in the kitchen (sorry for the un-lady-like speach). I sort of also mixed up my seasons this morning ;)
I had a lot of fun having George let me take pictures of him this morning for this post too ^-^. Instead of the normal asking of "smile!" it was, "freak out and say Spider!". On cue "smiles" sort of stress him out and I normally get a stressed out grin, you might say. This time however, I was shocked that most of the pictures I took were of him with a giggling, beautiful smile!!! The trick is to loose the control and let loose for pictures apparently! I found an amazing photographer tool for kid pictures!!! Make them giggle!!! I was enjoying the season of no spiders, besides the cold, but Im glad we're having a warm break now! It'll probably get cold again soon, but I'm going to enjoy the break besides those freaking spiders! Love to all. :) As we winded down our mountainous roads, we caught the site of reflective eyes behind some brush up ahead on our left. Scott slowed down as I told him to stop and asumed a deer was about to bolt across. That something was not a deer... it was a fully grown mountain lion. The big, so called cat, was the size of a smaller sized female African Lion, and it slowly, and heavily did a little run across the road. The thing was massive, its structure was mustled, its run heavy under its mass of weight, and it was big. The site of it was a blessing to see, because now we know exactly what we're up against.
When I first saw it, my mouth dropped in disbief. I never imagined one could be so large. All the hipe of mountain lions, right? Sure theyre dangerous for a goat, but not my 200lbs hubby right? So wrong, so wrong. The fear one would have of an African Lion could be placed in one of these, because they're just as dangerous. I'm sure all of them are not so big (I hope...), but one would be a fool not to take great precaution. I remember as we were driving slowly on, with my mouth open in shock, that the lion paused to look back at us. For the first time, for a few seconds, it entered my heart that we should move. Will that be the case? No, I think not. If anything however, its made us realize that having goats where we live in the mountains is a completely unreasonable idea. Not only that, but we're possibly endangering our friends and neighbors by having them, our goats. That one night we had left the goats out and our first was killed was the starting of it all, and now that its happened in daylight too, it seems keeping goats is futile endeavour. Sad, but it seems to be the fact. Its more clear than ever that this is not a game. Unless we spent about 50+ hours of clearing a radius of 50-100ft around our goat fence from brush, and installing burgler lights and scare sprinklers... and finding more goat buddies, it is certain that more goats would be taken. Even with all these measures there would be no guarantee they'd work either. Anyway, I suppose thats enough to write. But know this, those pictures they have of mountain lions on the internet make them look "dainty". They're not, they're big hunks of heavy muscle with powerful, massive paws, and if everyone saw what we saw, an extermination order would be passed. During day light today, Rogger, our head goat was taken by our local mountain lion. At the moment we're weighing our options and trying to figure out what to do. Sam, our Nigerian Dwarf wasn't at all happy as we put him in for the evening, poor guy.
There wasn't any tracks this time or signs besides a bent in pole in our fencing and Rogger gone. It's so sad that Sam is all alone now and that his last buddy is gone. Just think, we started with four goats, and now we just have one. I guess our inexperience has proved to be the death of our animals, even if we have been putting them in every night in a covered, secured kennel with straw, and have a solid fence (though mountain lions can jump 15 feet easily and climb fencing). I really wonder what we're going to do. Our home has now been marked as a prey buffet, and it so sucks... If anyone is interested in reading about mountain lions, here is a site that I'm studying up on at the moment: http://www.mountainlion.org Hugs and love to all, Mary and family Okay, the surprise… Emile has her first top teeth and bottom teeth by now, everyone knows; however her next tooth came at a complete surprise to me… It her back left molar! Yes, a molar! Aren’t those suppose to be last??? Well, this one wasn’t last and sleep has been a distant dream *me waving nostalgically*
Emilie has been doing pretty good besides the massive molar… and the cold she just caught from George… and besides she can’t sleep either. She’s very proud of her first steps, but her and “Toddlerhood” had a little bit of an out, so she’s going to take a break from walking! As for George, he’s crossed to a new phase of life, that Scott and I have gotten quickly over but love at the same time… He’s moved on to the whys… and the “why” of the why’s… and the “why” of the why, of the why’s… and the “WHY?” of the why of the why of the why! … and the, well, you get it. Anyway, I think he’s interested more in how many reasons there are behind a certain reason, and think he’s more curious about that fact than the actual reasons behind the whys. I’ve also determined that, by this fact, Toddlers do not need preschool… or this could be the exact reason parents send them to preschool. Well, we’re excited for this new journey, but just talking about it is stressing me out, so I’ll talk about the weather instead… no, really. I’m happy to announce that the only damage we had from the hurricane strength gusts was 6 shingles broken, and Scott fixed them with amazing expertise! True, since our roof has 40 degree angle (that the solar panel guys would only go on with rock climbing gear), I had to supervise him the whole time in the cold and in the car with the kids going just a tad bit over insane, but the job got done and Scott did an AMAZING job. Good work, hubby <3 Well, I bid you all a happy Sunday! I am so happy I stuck it out at church (the kids both had bad colds), because I really did need it and God knew I knew it. *sigh* Now we’re going to watch the Sunday Super Bowl… That’s a sabbath activity, right? Everyone, today January 31st of 2016 at around 4:00pm, Emilie took her first steps!!! And daddy was here to see it! We were not expecting it at all, and the ability to get this on video was amazing! Since Scott wasn't wearing a shirt I'm not putting the video on for public, but immediate family members will be sent a link to the video, and if you're a friend or family member and want the link but didn't receive one, please ask and we'll send it!
Emilie we're so proud of you and exciting for the new adventures that lie ahead for us all. We love you! Hugs, your whole family! |
